Caption
Armorer Donkin was a successful Newcastle solicitor and a close friend of the businessman and Lord Mayor of Newcastle, William Armstrong (1778–1857). Donkin assisted Armstrong's son, William George, later 1st Lord Armstrong (1810–1900), in the early days of his career as a lawyer, admitting him into partnership in 1835 and encouraging him in his scientific pursuits.

Oil painting on canvas, Armorer Donkin (1779-1851), British (English) School, 19th century. A half-length portrait of a gentleman, turned slightly to the right, looking at the spectator, wearing a dark coat and grey waistcoat, his left arm resting on the arm of the chair.
Provenance
Armstrong collection. Transferred by the Treasury to The National Trust in 1977 via the National Land Fund, aided by 3rd Baron Armstrong of Bamburgh and Cragside (1919 - 1987).
