Caption

Thomas Miles Richardson was one of the most prominent artists in Newcastle in the first half of the nineteenth century. He played an important part in the artistic life of the city, co-founding a number of societies in the 1820s and 30s, and encouraging the work of fellow artists. In this painting of Flamborough on the Yorkshire coast, a mast cuts up through the composition, providing a vertical accent against the dark horizon, thrown into relief by the warm tones of the setting sun.
