Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Highland Cattle and Sheep in a Mountainous Landscape, by Charles Jones (Barnham 1836 – 1892), monogrammed and dated, bottom right: CJ (in monogram) '65 [1865] and inscribed on reverse: Charles Jones 1865. A landscape with cows and sheep on moorland in the foreground and mountains in the background. This landscape was one of Lord Armstrong’s first purchases, bought around 1869. Jones was a successful Victorian painter of animals and landscapes.

Purchased by William George Armstrong, 1st Baron Armstrong of Cragside (1810-1900) circa 1869 (note in Lord Armstrong's inventory of heirlooms, c.1900); thence by descent; transferred by HM Treasury to the National Trust in 1977 via the National Land Fund, aided by 3rd Baron Armstrong of Bamburgh and Cragside (1919 - 1987)
