Oil painting on canvas, C. E. Adye, British (English) School, late 18th century. A half-length portrait of a young man, facing the spectator, wearing a light-grey coat, gold-braided red waistcoat and white cravat, seated at a table, writing on a sheet of paper supported on a large open volume.
Armstrong collection; transferred by the Treasury to The National Trust in 1977 via the National Land Fund, aided by 3rd Baron Armstrong of Bamburgh and Cragside (1919 - 1987).
