Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Charles William Stewart, 3rd Marquess of Londonderry (1778-1854) by James Godsell Middleton (1805 – London 1874). A full-length portrait, wearing uniform of Colonel of 2nd Life Guards and in the regalia of the Order of the Garter, Order of Maria Theresa of Austria, Order of the Bath and Order of the Guelph of Hanover. Known as the ‘Soldier Marquess’, Charles was a flamboyant and colourful character. He was a dashing officer, commanded a hussar brigade during the Peninsular War, becoming an Adjutant-General and was commended for his bravery at the Battle of Talavera in 1809.

Acquired at auction by Lady Mairi Bury in 2003 ; On loan to the National Trust from Lady Mairi Bury (1921-2009), 1976, then accepted by HM Government in lieu of Inheritance Tax and allocated to the National Trust, 2013
