Summary
Oil painting on canvas, The Lamentation, by Luigi Corsi (Florence 1799 - Florence 1858 or after), after Fra Bartolommeo (Florence 1472 - Florence 1517), 1856, after an original of 1511-12. The dead body of Christ is presented to the viewer by St John, the Virgin Mary, and Mary Magdalene. Christ is seated at the foot of the cross, naked except for a loin cloth. His right arm hangs limply by his side, and his left arm is held by the Virgin Mary behind him, wearing a blue mantle. Christ's body is supported by John the Evangelist at the left, wearing blue under an orange mantle. His legs and feet are cradled by Mary Magdalene at the right, also wearing orange.
Provenance
On loan to the National Trust from Lady Mairi Bury (1921-2009) 1980, then accepted by HM Government in lieu of Inheritance Tax and allocated to the National Trust 2013.
