Summary
Oil painting on canvas, 'Brilliant': A Horse at Manger, attributed to Sir Edwin Henry Landseer (London 1802 - London 1873), monogrammed 'E. L.'. A three-quarter-length portrait of a horse, standing to the left, its head turned back towards the viewer. The horse is in a stable, and a manger with hay can be seen to the left.
Provenance
Cromartie, 4th Duke of Sutherland (1851–1913), Stafford House, London; given by his widow, Millicent, Duchess dowager of Sutherland, and their eldest son, George, 5th Duke, to Edith Viscountess Castlereagh, later Marchioness of Londonderry; and then by descent to her youngest daughter, Lady Mairi Bury; on loan to the National Trust from Lady Mairi Bury (1921-2009), 1976, then accepted by HM Government in lieu of Inheritance Tax and allocated to the National Trust, 2013

On the manger: E. L. On a mourning envelope, stuck in the back of the canvas: this picture by Landseer was given to Viscountess Castlereagh by Millicent, Duchess of Sutherland and the Duke of Sutherland in memory of the IV Duke - July 1913. The picture always hung in the Duke's sitting room at Stafford House - the horse was a favourite hunter of Lady Castlereagh's grandfather, the third Duke.
