Summary
Oil painting on canvas, King William III (1650–1702) in Garter Robes, after Sir Godfrey Kneller (Lübeck 1646/9 - London 1723). A full-length portrait of William of Orange, turned slightly to the left, left hand at hip with his left foot forward, gazing at the spectator. He is wearing Garter robes, white cravat, garter robes, dark cloak, white hose with long dark hair. His right hand is resting on a crown on table at left. Red-brown velvet drapes behind on the right. Gilt frame.
Provenance
Purchased for Belton House with a grant from the National Heritage Memorial Fund (NHMF) from Edward John Peregrine Cust, 7th Baron Brownlow, C. St J. (b.1936) in 1984; on permanent loan to Oxburgh Hall to replace another version that was sold in 1951
