Summary description

Oil painting on panel, Matilda Ann Goodman Southwood, Mrs Thomas Cussans (1810 - 1870), British (English) School, circa 1860/65. An oval head-and-shoulders portrait of an smiling elderly woman, turned slightly to the right, gazing to the right wearing a black dress and white lace cap. A handwritten note on the reverse reads "Matilda, daughter of Thomas Southwood / and Wife of Thomas Cussans Esq / H.E.I.C.S. / Mother of Anne Messel / Grandmother of Leonard Charles Rudolph Messel". She married in Guernsey in 1828.

accepted in lieu of tax by HM Treasury and transferred to the National Trust, 1995
