Full description
1824 proved to be a nostalgic time in the United States for Washington and the Revolutionary generation. The 50th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence was coming up and General Lafayette had returned to the U.S for a triumphal tour as ‘the Nation’s guest.’ This nostalgic and patriotic feeling was picked up in popular culture with engravings of both Washington and Lafayette finding their way onto commemorative transfer printed ceramics across the pond in England.
