Full description
Edwyn Scudamore-Stanhope was the eldest son of the Henry Edwyn Chandos Scudamore-Stanhope (1821-1887) of Holme Lacey (9th Earl of Chesterfield from 1883). He practised as a barrister and was an Assistant Private Secretary to the Chancellor of the Exchequer before becoming 10th Earl of Chesterfield upon the death of his father, after which he had a series of royal court positions, including Privy Councillor from 1894 and Master of the Horse from 1915-1922. He married the much younger Enid Wilson (1878-1957), second daughter of Hull shipping magnate Charles Wilson (later Baron Nunburnholme) in 1900. The couple sold Holme Lacy in 1910 and resided in London, but Enid later bought Beningbrough Hall in 1917. Lord Chesterfield subsequently split his time between Beningbrough (where he bred Labradors) and his London club.
