Caption
This depiction of the Madonna and Christ Child is thought to have been painted by the Sienese artist Andrea del Brescianino. Together with his brother Raffaello, he painted various altarpieces in Tuscany; consequently, their work cannot clearly be separated. In addition to altarpieces they painted mythological figures and small devotional works. Andrea's most substantial surviving work is the altarpiece depicting the Coronation of the Virgin in the church of SS Pietro e Paolo in Siena. The Powis painting is thought to have been acquired by Clive of India or his son during the eighteenth century.
