Caption
Jakob Philipp Hackert was born in Brandenburg, and in his youth trained as an artist with his father Philipp – a portraitist and painter of animals. In 1758 he went to study at the Akademie der Künste in Berlin, and subsequently travelled to Paris in 1765. In 1768 he went to Italy, where he spent the rest of his life, gaining a reputation as a talented landscape painter. This early work, which was produced when he was only eighteen, depicts an idealised vision of pastoral life. Compared to most of his later works, it is painted on a comparatively modest scale.
