Caption
The eldest son of Sir William Herbert of Colebrook in Monmouthshire, Henry was a distant relation of the Powis and Chirbury branches of the Herbert family. In contrast to his kinsmen, his sympathies were with Parliament during the Civil War. As a ‘Roundhead’ Colonel, he captured Cardiff and Swansea in 1645.
Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Henry Herbert of Colebrook (1617-1656), English School, dated 1641. A half-length portrait with lace collar. The sitter was distantly related to the Powis and Chribury branches of the Herbert family and was Parlimentarian during the Civil War, capturing Cardiff and Swansea in 1645.
Provenance
Accepted by HM Treasury on 21st March, 1963 in lieu of tax and conveyed to National Trust ownership on 29th November 1963. Label on reverse of painting reads - '"Henry Herbert of Colebrook Esq" From the Collection of Sir Charles Slingsby Bart, of Scriven's Park, Knaresborough, 22nd July 1872.' Was part of the National Museum of Wales 'Portraits From Welsh Houses' exhibition in 1948.
