This portrait of Edward Herbert, 1st Baron Herbert of Cherbury, is perhaps unfinished. Unusually, it depicts his head emerging from clouds. It may have been painted posthumously to serve as a memorial.

Provenance
Accepted by HM Treasury on 21st March, 1963 in lieu of tax and conveyed to National Trust ownership on 29th November 1963. Recorded at Powis Castle in Montgomery Collections Vol VI P.148 in 1873.
