Summary
Oil painting on canvas, The Final Charge of the British Cavalry at the Battle of Orthez, 27 February 1814 by Denis Dighton (London 1792 – St Servan 1827), signed and dated bottom right: D.Dighton 1815 [1816?]. The commanders shown are Lord Edward Somerset and Lord Combermere of the 7th Light Dragoons. A skirmish takes place in the foreground with trees to the left. More troops can be seen on the montains in the distance.On 27th February 1814 the British and Spanish under Wellington defeated the French under Soult at Orthez in southern France. The future Marquess of Anglesey did not serve in this part of the Peninsular War. The commanders shown are Lord Edward Somerset and Lord Combermere (ironically, the man Wellington would have preferred above Anglesey to command the allied cavalry at Waterloo)
