Summary
Oil painting on canvas, King Charles I on Horseback, after Sir Anthony Van Dyck (Antwerp 1599 - Blackfriars 1641), late 17th century-early 18th century. The original painting, circa 1637, having belonged to Charles I is now in the National Gallery (NG1172). King Charles I is portrayed on horseback in armour, facing to the left, holding a general’s baton in his right hand and wearing the Lesser George medallion, the badge of the Order of the Garter. A large sword hangs down on his left.
Provenance
Date of acquisition unknown; John Loveday saw this picture in the Old Dining Room in 1733, and called it 'a small life-piece of King Charles I on a dun horse, such as one at Brancepeth' [a miniature]; thence by descent; with some of the contents, in 1978, that were acquired along with Chirk Castle from Lt-Col Ririd Myddelton (1902–1988) by the National Land Fund and handed, on loan for 99 years, to the Secretary of State for Wales (In 1981 Chirk was transferred into the ownership of the National Trust); accepted by the Inland Revenue in lieu of Inheritance Tax from the estate of Lt-Col Ririd Myddelton (1902–1988) and transferred to the National Trust for display to the public at Chirk Castle in 1999
