Oil painting on canvas, King Charles II (1630-1685), in Garter Robes, after Sir Peter Lely (Soest 1618 – London 1680), circa 1682. A three-quarter length, turned three-quarters to right, full-bottomed wig, wearing Garter robes, his right hand by his side, holding back his cloak, his left hand on a table with his plumed hat. After a full length in the Duke of Buccleuch's collection (Boughton).The original Duke of Buccleuch was Charles II's illegitimate son
Provenance
A set of six Garter portraits at Chirk possibly acquired as perquisites by Frances Whitmore, Lady Myddelton (1666 - 1694) when Lady-in-Waiting to Princess Anne, before she became queen in 1683 and brought to Chirk on Frances's own marriage in 1686; in house catalogue, c.1900. as in Saloon (Showing diagrammatic hang [north wall, top register] and manuscript picture list)as “3. King Charles 2nd”; with some of the contents, in 1978, that were acquired along with Chirk Castle from Lt-Col Ririd Myddelton (1902–1988) by the National Land Fund and handed, on loan for 99 years, to the Secretary of State for Wales (In 1981 Chirk was transferred into the ownership of the National Trust); accepted by the Inland Revenue in lieu of Inheritance Tax from the estate of Lt-Col Ririd Myddelton (1902–1988) and transferred to the National Trust for display to the public at Chirk Castle in 1999
