Summary
Oil painting on canvas, James Scott, Duke of Monmouth and Buccleuch, KG (1649-1685), in Garter Robes, after Sir Peter Lely (Soest 1618 – London 1680), inscribed with sitter's name, top right, circa 1682. A three-quarter length portrait, standing, turned three-quarters to left, gazing at spectator, wearing Garter robes, full-bottomed wig, lace cravat, the cloak pinned back to reveal the proper left hand, the right arm leaning on a ledge, his plumed hat held in his right hand. Scott was the illegitimate son of Charles II and Lucy Walters; his mistress, Eleanor Needham, was sister of Jane Myddelton (see No. 37). He married Anne Scott, Countess of Buccleuch. A set of six Garter portraits at Chirk possibly acquired as perquisites by Frances Whitmore, Lady Myddelton (1666 - 1694) when Lady-in-Waiting to Princess Anne, before she became queen in 1683 and brought to Chirk on Frances's own marriage in 1686;and thence by descent until 1978; with some of the contents, in 1978, that were acquired along with Chirk Castle from Lt-Col Ririd Myddelton (1902–1988) by the National Land Fund and handed, on loan for 99 years, to the Secretary of State for Wales (In 1981 Chirk was transferred into the ownership of the National Trust) On loan to the Trust from Guy Charles Myddelton. Gifted to Guy C Myddelton from Captain David Myddelton in 2010. Purchased by the National Trust from Mr Guy Myddelton in 2023.
