Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Sir Thomas III Myddelton, 1st Bt (1624-1663), English School, circa 1670. A half-length portrait, in a painted oval, of a young man, turned three-quarters to right, gazing at spectator, with shoulder-length dark hair and thin moustache, wearing white linen cravat and breastplate with gilt clasps, and gold embroidered white satin sleeves. A drape to left, with sky and cloud beyond.

Provenance
Probably commissioned circa 1670, posthumously, by Mary Napier, second wife and widow of Thomas Myddleton II and mother of Thomas Myddelton IIII and thence by descent; in Chirk Castle manuscript list, 1910 as in “L[ong] G[allery] Oil paintings in carved gilt frames, as Lord Fairfax.";with some of the contents, in 1978, that were acquired along with Chirk Castle from Lt-Col Ririd Myddelton (1902–1988) by the National Land Fund and handed, on loan for 99 years, to the Secretary of State for Wales. (In 1981 Chirk was transferred into the ownership of the National Trust). On loan to the Trust from Guy Charles Myddelton. Gifted to Guy C Myddelton from Captain David Myddelton in 2010. Purchased by the National Trust from Mr Guy Myddelton in 2023.
