Summary
Oil painting on panel, Prince Frederick Henry, Prince of Orange, Stadholder of the United Provinces (1584-1647), previously called Supposed Portrait of George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham (1592-1628), attributed to Michiel Jansz. van Miereveldt (Delft 1567 – Delft 1641), circa 1610. A head-and-shoulders portrait, turned slightly to the right, gazing at spectator, wearing armour with a lace ruff and gold fringed red sash.
Provenance
Probably acquired by Philip I Yorke (1743-1804), as one of a small group of pictures – including those of Major and Captain Meoles – with Dutch connections; listed as one of those ‘Board Pictures’, just as ‘Prince of Orange’, in the undated list of c.1825 (Clwyd Record Office, no.2419); thence by descent and inheritance at Erddig, until given by Philip Yorke III (1905 – 1978) along with the estate, house and contents to the National Trust in 1973.
