Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Elizabeth Cartwright, Viscountess Tyrconnel (d.1780) by Enoch Seeman the younger (Gdańsk c.1694 – London 1744). A three-quarter length portrait of the second wife of Sir John Brownlow, Viscount Tyrconnel (1690-1724);his first wife Eleanor Cust having died in 1730, whom she married in 1732. She is wearing a white satin dress, seated by a table on which she rests her left arm. She was the daughter of William Cartwright of Marnham, Nottinghamshire. There were no children of the marriage and at first she was much disliked by her husband's family, but later became a cherished aunt of his Cust nephews and nieces. It was on a ship named after her that four of the five Innuit Indians brought to England by her nephew George Cartwright in 1772, and much feted, died on their way back to Labrador. .
