Summary
Oil painting on panel, An Unknown Man, Dutch School, mid 17th century. A half-length portrait of a man turned slightly to the left but looking out, seated behind a stone ledge, on which he rests his left hand. He is dressed in black, with a broad plain white linen collar and white linen cuffs, and wears a half-conical hat at a jaunty angle over his flowing brown locks. The left-hand side of an arched opening is faintly delineated to the sitter’s left.
Provenance
In 1844 inventory and thence by descent until acquired in 1948 by HM Government when Sir Lyonel, 4th Bt (1854 – 1952) and Sir Cecil Tollemache, 5th Bt (1886 – 1969) presented Ham House to the National Trust, and entrusted to the care of the Victoria & Albert Museum, until 1990, when returned to the care of the National Trust, and to which ownership was transferred in 2002
