Summary
Oil painting on canvas, An Old Woman and a Young Girl in a Garden (Vertumnus and Pomona, with Juno's Peacock) by Dirck van den Bergen (Haarlem 1640-1695). An old woman, a young girl and a peacock in a garden with a classical building in the background. In classical mythology Vertumnus and Pomona were the gods of orchards. Vertumnus wooed Pomona in various disguises, eventually turning into an old woman to plead his cause.
Provenance
In 1677 inventory and thence by descent until acquired in 1948 by HM Government when Sir Lyonel, 4th Bt (1854 – 1952) and Sir Cecil Tollemache, 5th Bt (1886 – 1969) presented Ham House to the National Trust, and entrusted to the care of the Victoria & Albert Museum, until 1990, when returned to the care of the National Trust, and to which ownership was transferred in 2002
