Summary
Oil painting on canvas, A Young Boy Wearing the Garter Star, British (English) School, circa 1700. A half-length portrait of a young boy, turned to the left, head turned slightly to the right, gazing at the spectator, with dark brown shoulder-length 'natural' hair, wearing a grey coat with wide cuffs and silver buttons and a long lace cravat with a blue sash from his left shoulder and the star of the Order of the Garter. Possibly Prince William Henry (1689-1700), Duke of Gloucester, appointed Knight of the Order of the Garter in 1696, aged 7.
Provenance
In 1844 inventory and thence by descent until acquired in 1948 by HM Government when Sir Lyonel, 4th Bt (1854 – 1952) and Sir Cecil Tollemache, 5th Bt (1886 – 1969) presented Ham House to the National Trust, and entrusted to the care of the Victoria & Albert Museum, until 1990, when returned to the care of the National Trust, and to which ownership was transferred in 2002.
