Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Landscape with Nursing Herdswoman, Sleeping Herdsman, a cow, a horse and a sheep, by Dirck van den Bergen (Haarlem 1640 - 1690), c.1675. Beside a road, in front of an Antique ruin, a woman sits on the ground stilling her child, with a dog beside her, and surrounded by a cow, a horse, and sheep. Further away on the road, a shepherd sleeps under a tree, with a couple [?] of sheep beside him. There is a view to a plain bounded by distant mountains on the right.

Painted for the Duke & Duchess of Lauderdale (1677 Inventory, 29 May 1677:The White Closet: “one of three pictures over ye Chimney & doores”; ownership transferred to the National Trust 2002.
