Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Lady Elizabeth Tollemache, Lady Lorne, later Duchess of Argyll (1659-1735) by Sir Peter Lely (Soest 1618 – London 1680), circa 1675-77. A three-quarter-length portrait of a young woman, the Duchess of Lauderdale's eldest daughter, seated beneath a tree, head inclined slightly to the left, gazing at the spectator, blonde hair, tightly curled with a tress falling on her left shoulder, she is wearing a brown dress with blue cloak (now discoloured), a gold-fringed gauze round her breast.She is holding up a flower in her right hand and there are flowers held on her lap with her left hand.
Provenance
Acquired in 1948 by HM Government when Sir Lyonel, 4th Bt (1854 – 1952) and Sir Cecil Tollemache, 5th Bt (1886 – 1969) presented Ham House to the National Trust, and entrusted to the care of the Victoria & Albert Museum, until 1990, when returned to the care of the National Trust, and to which ownership was transferred in 2002
