Summary
Oil painting on panel, A Landscape, attributed to Simon de Vlieger (Rotterdam 1601 – Weesp 1653), mid 17th century. A road leading through the landscape to the right, with trees in the centre middle ground; a wooden doorway by a fence in the centre; a man on the road with a dog; cattle in a pond in the left foreground. There seems little reason to doubt the 17th-century attribution of this picture to ‘Devlega’ in the 1683 ‘Estimate of Pictures’, even though Simon de Vlieger is known almost exclusively as a painter of marine subjects; one of his largest pictures is in the Cabinet Room at Felbrigg (NT). It was not, however, in the Green Closet, but apparently in the Duchess’s Dressing Room.
