Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Daniel in the Lions' Den, attributed to Jacopo Bassano il vecchio (Bassano 1510 – Venice 1592) and Francesco Bassano the younger (Bassano del Grappa 1549 – Venice 1592). The scene depicted is the biblical story of Daniel, in the centre ground kneeling, and gazing aloft at two angels. He is flanked by two lions while around the den, which resembles a Roman forum, crowds watch.
Provenance
In Mr Wyck's 1683 valuation catalogue; thence by descent until acquired in 1948 by HM Government when Sir Lyonel, 4th Bt (1854 – 1952) and Sir Cecil Tollemache, 5th Bt (1886 – 1969) presented Ham House to the National Trust, and entrusted to the care of the Victoria & Albert Museum, until 1990, when returned to the care of the National Trust, and to which ownership was transferred in 2002
