Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Lionel Tollemache, 4th Earl of Dysart (1708- 1770) by John Vanderbank the younger (London 1694 - London 1739), 1730. A full-length portrait of Lionel who inherited Ham and the Tollemache estates on the death of his grandfather, the 3rd Earl, in 1727, shown in peer’s robes, wearing peer’s robes of red with ermine lining,turned slightly to the left, head turned slightly to the right, gazing at the spectator, his right hand on his hip, the left resting on an ornate table on which sits his coronet, dark hair, In the background at the left is a Corinthian pillar and a lage stone urn on a pedestal. On his return from the Grand Tour in 1728 he began extensive refurbishments at both Ham and Helmingham Hall in Suffolk, which continued until the 1750s.
Provenance
In 1820 catalogue; acquired in 1948 by HM Government when Sir Lyonel, 4th Bt (1854 – 1952) and Sir Cecil Tollemache, 5th Bt (1886 – 1969) presented Ham House to the National Trust, and entrusted to the care of the Victoria & Albert Museum, until 1990, when returned to the care of the National Trust, and to which ownership was transferred in 2002
