Oil painting on canvas (oval), An Unknown Girl, British (English) School, signed PL (in monogram) [the monogram may be a later addition, intended to pass the picture off as a Lely], 18th century. An oval bust portrait, turned to the left, looking over her left shoulder to the right, wearing a white dress and crimson cloak; a wreath of flowers in her hair.

Devonshire House; Hardwick Hall Catalogue, 1860; by descent until, following the death of the 10th Duke of Devonshire (1895 - 1950), Hardwick Hall and its contents were accepted by HM Treasury in part payment of death duties and transferred to the National Trust, in 1959
