Caption
Horatio Walpole was the son of Robert Walpole (1650-1700) of Houghton, and younger brother of Sir Robert Walpole, 1st Earl of Orford (1676-1745). As a Whig, he held various governmental posts, including MP for Castle Rising, Beeralston, East Looe, Great Yarmouth, and Norwich. He was secretary to various envoys and ministers, Privy Councillor, and ambassador to The Hague. He advocated an alliance with Prussia and fostered mutual understanding with her. He was much satirised by his contemporaries for the coarseness of his speech and manners. This is a reduced copy of the three-quarter length portrait of 1739 by van Loo at Wolterton. It was engraved in 1741.
