Caption
Lady Caroline Gordon, Lady Chesham (1785-1866) was the first daughter of George Gordon, 9th Marquess of Huntly (1761-1853). On 16 June, 1814, she married Charles Compton Cavendish, created Baron Chesham in 1858, fourth son of the 1st Earl of Burlington of the 2nd creation. Thomas Barber had a wide practice in the Midlands and the North of England, where most of his pictures remain.
Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Lady Caroline Gordon, Lady Chesham (1785-1866) by Thomas Barber the elder (Nottingham 1771 - Nottingham 1843), circa 1805/15. A half-length portrait, inspired by the style of the artist Sir Thomas Lawrence, of the first daughter of George Gordon, 9th Marquess of Huntly (1761-1853), turned to the left, gazing at the spectator, wearing white dress with red necklace and red cloak. She married, on 16 June, 1814, Charles Compton Cavendish, created Baron Chesham in 1858, fourth son of the 1st Earl of Burlington of the 2nd creation.

In Lady Louisa C. Cavendish, later Lady Egerton,Catalogue of the pictures at Hardwick Hall, 1860 and by descent until, following the death of Edward William Spencer Cavendish, 10th Duke of Devonshire (1895 - 1950) , Hardwick Hall and its contents were accepted by HM Treasury in part payment of death duties and transferred to the National Trust, in 1959
