Summary
Oil painting on canvas, John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough (1650-1722), after Sir Godfrey Kneller (Lübeck 1646/9 - London 1723). A three-quarter length portrait in armour, turned to left, gazing at spectator, wearing the ribbon and star of the Garter, a baton in his right hand which is resting on a pedestal. The original full-length portrait of 1712 is in the Spencer collection at Althorp.
Provenance
Althorp Collection; given to the 6th Duke of Devonshire (1790-1858) by Lord Spencer (1734 – 1783); in 1845 Chatsworth and Hardwick catalogue; and thence by descent until, following the death of Edward William Spencer Cavendish, 10th Duke of Devonshire (1895 - 1950), Hardwick Hall and its contents were accepted by HM Treasury in part payment of death duties and transferred to the National Trust, in 1959
