This gold insignia for the Dame Cross of the British Empire was awarded to Ellen Terry by the Queen in 1925. The title – the highest level of award for merit by the Crown – was established in 1917. Dame Terry was the second actress to receive this prestigious honour. Her acting partner and friend Henry Irving was knighted in 1895.
