Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Called Margaret ‘Peg’ Woffington (?1714-1760) as 'Sir Harry Wildair' in George Farquhar's 'The Constant Couple' (1700), in the style of Thomas Hudson (Devonshire 1701 – Twickenham 1779). She was first seen in the part in April 1740. A head-and-shoulders portrait to the left, wearing a white satin doublet and cavalier's hat. It was probably originally a portrait of a man and subsequently given this misleading identification.

Purchased from Sir Henry Irving's posthumous sale, Christies, 16th December 1905, lot 108; given with Smallhythe in 1939 and transferred in 1947 on the death of Edith Craig (1869- 1947)
