Summary
Black and red chalk with white heightening on brown paper, Dame Ellen Terry (1847-1928) as a Child as 'Mamillius' in William Shakespeare's 'A Winter's Tale' by Sir William Nicholson (Newark-on-Trent 1872 – Berkshire 1949). Mamillius was Ellen Terry's first part, given to her by the wife of the actor/manager Charles Kean, when 'The Winter's Tale' was performed at the Princesses Theatre, London in 1856. She is shown here as a small child in a red and silver dress with pink tights, standing by the stage curtain. On the first night she tripped over her go-cart, but Lewis Carrol described her 'a beautiful little creature who played with remarkable spirit'. With an obituary notice from The Times for Sir William Nicholson, dated 17 May 1949, pasted on the back.
