Summary
Oil painting on canvas painting, Classical Landscape with an Episode from the Life of Artaxerxes, follower of Claude Lorrain (Champagne 1600 – Rome 1682), 17th century. Placed at Kedleston in substitution for a genuine Claude, acquired from John Barnard, sold in 1930, and now in a private collection in New York. This substitute cleverly uses the setting of an actual Claude, now in the Musée de Grenoble, for a story taken from Plutarch. Probably the picture in Lady Scarsdale's Room in 1769.
