Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Hendrik van Brederode, later 17th Lord of Brederode and Vianen (1638-1657) aged 10, by Cornelius Johnson (London 1593 - Utrecht 1661) signed and dated under the chair: Cornelius Jonson / Fecit 1648 and with a false later inscription, as ‘Prince Henry’. A full-length portrait as a young boy, standing centre facing in a tent, drape to right, table to left, on which rests a morion. Wearing a suit of armour, long riding boots with spurs, rests his right hand on a cane and his left rests on his hip, palm outward near hilt of his sword. Known as ‘Prince Henry’ and attributed to Cornelis Jonson, from the moment of its first appearance in the Music Room in 1771 (transferred to the Wardrobe c.1787). Prince Henry properly refers to the older brother of Charles I, but the date of the picture makes this impossible. Nor can it be Charles II's youngest brother, Henry, Duke of Gloucester, since Jonson left for Holland in 1643, whereas Henry did not escape to Paris until 1652. What seems to have happened is that an earlier inscription with the name ‘Henry’ was misinterpreted. Frederick van Kretschmar has recently very plausibly suggested that the actual sitter was Hendrik, 17th and penultimate Lord of Brederode and Vianen, only surviving son of Johan Wolfert van Bredrode (1599-1655), Marshall of the Forces of the Dutch Republic, and his second wife, Louisa Countess of Solms-Braunfels. Hendrik obtained a captaincy in a troop of cavalry at the tender age of fourteen.
