Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Mary Peek, Mrs George Smith Drew (1821 -1896) by Madame Louisa Starr Canziani (London 1845 - London 1909), signed and dated (bottom right) 1898. A three-quarter-length portrait of Julius Drewe's mother who married Reverend George Smith (1818 - 1880), son of George Drew (1790-1867) in 1845. She is seated wearing a black dress with a white flowing shawl and cap, reclining against a red cushion on a high backed 17th century chair. Painted two years after sitter's death [?] - could be Mrs Frances Richardson of Burbage, Derbyshire, mother-in-law of Julius Drewe.
Provenance
This item forms part of the original Drewe family collection at Castle Drogo. It was transferred to the National Trust in 1986.
