Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Mary Queen of Scots bidding Farewell to France, 1561 by William Powell Frith (Ripon 1819 – London 1909), 1893, exhibited at Royal Academy, signed bottom right. A female figure standing on the stern of a ship holding a handkerchief in her left hand and resting her head on her right hand. The painting does not have a former connection with Newton House. Another version, signed and dated,1851 was exhibited at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, 1987.
