Summary
Pastel on paper, A Nymph: Summer by William Hoare of Bath, RA (Eye 1707 – Bath 1792), circa 1759. Half-length profile to left, partially draped, right hand holding drapery at the back of her neck, pearls in her hair. Another version of this sold by Henry Spencer & Sons, Retford, 24.7.1981, lot 410, as French School, early 19th century. The same compositions, but enlarged to half length, in oils, are at Arlington Court, Devon (NT 988011 & NT 988012) and an amateur pastel copy is at Kingston Lacy (NT 1251145).
Provenance
Recorded as one of 'Two Venus's' by Horace Walpole at his visit in 1762 (in 1759 ‘2 Venus's’ were included in a payment of £100 on 23 July); commissioned by Henry II Hoare (1705-1785) and thence by descent; given to the National Trust along with the house, its grounds, and the rest of the contents by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947) in 1946
