Summary
A painted beech chair, Italian, probably Neapolitan, circa 1820, one of a set of six. Painted in grey and highlighted with green. The back with an upper panel of eight foliate bundles, tied and waisted and flaring at top and bottom. The seat upholstered in gold striped silk and raised on four rectangular-section tapering sabre supports. The rails and blocks at the top of the legs decorated with green lines and circles.
Provenance
Believed to have been purchased by William Noel-Hill, 3rd Baron Berwick (1773 - 1842) whilst in Italy. Thence by descent and listed in the probate Inventory taken at Attingham Park in 1947 as an heirloom (p. 10) and in the c. 1953 Inventory (p. 12). Bequeathed by Thomas Henry Noel-Hill, 8th Baron Berwick (1877 -1947) with the estate, house and contents of Attingham and transferred to the National Trust on 15th May 1953.
