Summary
Central Hall decoration. South, West, North and East walls. Wall paintings depicting Chevy Chase, Eminent Northumbrians, flower paintings, inscriptions and decorated skirting. William Bell Scott (1811-1890) was commissioned by Pauline and Walter Trevelyan in 1856 to decorate the Central Hall, built by John Dobson in 1853-4 when the Courtyard was roofed over. He decorated the majority of the tiers, and was commissioned in 1863 to illustrate the border ballad of 'Chevy Chase' which itself commemorates the Battle of Otterburn in 1388. Chevy Chase which was completed in 1868. Additional work on the Eminent Northumbrians frieze, birds and trees was undertaken by Pauline, Lady Trevelyan. Flower paintings on the piers were painted by Pauline Trevelyan, John Ruskin, Laura Capel Lofft, Arthur Hughes, Edith Mary Dorothy Collingwood and Emilia Pattinson.
