Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Landscape with a Man Fishing, by Gaspard Dughet (Rome 1615 – Rome 1675). A landscape with a man seated fishing in the foreground with a woman standing by him. Farm buildings and a round tower can be seen on a low hill in the centre and left of centre, with trees to the right.
Provenance
This or one of the two paintings by Gaspard Poussin in the private collection at Petworth (L/PET/P/421, L/PET/P/424) may be the picture bought by the 2nd Earl of Egremont (1710-1763) at Major's sale, April 1751, lot 49a 'A Landskip' by Gaspard Poussin (bought at Major's sale, Ap.1751 Landscape Gaspar Poussin £9.19.6.'). Thence by descent, until the death in 1952 of the 3rd Lord Leconfield, who had given Petworth to the National Trust in 1947, and whose nephew and heir, John Wyndham, 6th Lord Leconfield and 1st Lord Egremont (1920-72) arranged for the acceptance of the major portion of the collections at Petworth in lieu of death duties (the first ever such arrangement) in 1956 by H.M.Treasury.
