Oil painting on oak panel (circular), An Unknown Man, Corneille de Lyon (The Hague c.1500/10 - Lyons 1575). c. 1535. A head-and-shoulders portrait of a bearded man, facing, wearing wears a black coat with salmon-pink lining visible at the neck, white shirt and black cap, against a dark green background.

Unknown British collection (see label on back); Trotti, Paris (photo in Witt Library, Courtauld Institute of Art); Huldschinsky sale, Berlin, 10 May 1928, lot 62, repd.; Mortimer L. Schiff, New York; his posthumous sale, Christie's, 24 June 1938, lot 64, repd.; purchased for 2nd Viscount Bearsted for 520 gns via Sir Alec Martin (1884-1971); given with Upton House to the National Trust by Walter Samuel, 2nd Viscount Bearsted (1882 – 1948) shortly before his death.
