Caption
Made by the eminent metalsmiths Joshua Hart & Sons, these firedogs support the large fire grate which was the only source of heat in the library. They were made to a design by John Hungerford Pollen who designed the decoration for the library in the 1860's including the ornate painted frieze, the hooded fireplace (now removed) devoting careful attention to even the smallest details on the firedogs. The sun-in-splendour symbol which is the main feature of the firedogs is taken from the coat-of-arms of the Lothian family.
