Summary
Nodding Mandarin figure. Meissen. Seated female figure with very large ears and pot belly, ponytail with gold band, floral low-cut costume with petal collar tied with blue ribbon, white stockings and blue shoes with high heels. With counterbalanced head, tongue and hands which move up and down. Late C19. Blue crossed sword mark. It has been suggested that pieces like this are used in China as an earthquake detector.
Provenance
Part of the Lothian Collection. The hall and contents were bequeathed to the National Trust by Philip, 11th Marquess of Lothian (1882-1940).
