Provenance: ink inscription: 'To Courtauld / in remembrance of many happy days / from Sam / Christmas 1911' [i.e. Lord Courtauld-Thomson (1865-1954)]; armorial bookplate Courtauld-Thomson with motto: Fortiter aut suaviter; black ink stamp on flyleaf: The National Trust founded 1895. Binding: untrimmed in twentieth-century full brown stippled morocco, lettered and tooled gilt; spine eroded with lower portion lost.
