Provenance: illuminated armorial device of the Schönberg (Germany) or Schomberg family (France) on verso of title page: shield Or (gold), a lion rampant per fess gules and vert (red and green), behind shield a red staff surmounted by a gold cross; the book is dedicated to Nikolaus von Schönberg (1472-1537), Archbishop of Capua, so perhaps these are his arms. Library of Sir Richard Ellys (1682-1742). Binding: eighteenth-century gold-tooled full dark blue goatskin; sewn onto five sewing supports; five raised bands; triple gilt fillet border with small gilt sunburst cornerpiece stamps; double gilt fillets along board edges; gilt foliate roll pattern on turn-ins; spine gold-tooled in five compartments with single fillet and and roll frame, tooled to a centre and corner design with foliate, small star and dot tools; roll at tail and hatched roll on the raised bands; brown goatskin label in second compartment with gilt title 'PLAUTI | COMOEDIAE | AP: ALD.'; gilt edges; comb pattern marbled endpapers. Both boards water-stained.
